On November 20, 2022, the highly anticipated FIFA World Cup officially opened in Qatar. As a strategic partner of BASF Construction Chemicals, IEC Inc. contributed to several key infrastructure projects, including the Dukhan Highway (Doha Orbital Expressway), Russell Wharf Interchange, and New Orbital Highway Contract 2 (NOH2). IEC provided integrated services encompassing consulting, design, manufacturing, transportation, and on-site installation guidance for bridge expansion joints. Since 2016, IEC has supplied over 2,000 meters of bridge expansion joints for Qatar’s World Cup infrastructure, generating millions of dollars in revenue.
The Russell Wharf Interchange, connecting Doha to the “City of the Future,” Lusail, features SB-400 modular expansion joints designed and supplied by IEC.
The Doha Orbital Expressway, a 60-kilometer, 14-lane highway radiating from central Doha, was designed to alleviate urban traffic congestion during the World Cup. Collaborating with renowned design firms Hyder and Aecom, IEC played a vital role in the selection and technical customization of expansion joints. In response to sections exceeding normal displacement and angular rotation limits, IEC adapted its XLF Seismic Expansion Joints in compliance with AASHTO LRFD bridge design standards. These modifications passed static strength tests, fatigue analyses, and three-dimensional simulation validations.

The New Orbital Highway Contract 2 (NOH2), a flagship project of Qatar National Vision 2030, demonstrated IEC’s technological and quality excellence. Bureau Veritas conducted a comprehensive three-day ISO 9001 quality management system audit of IEC, confirming full compliance with international standards.
In 2017, IEC’s International Business Director led a team to the NOH2 site to oversee construction. IEC’s engineers, with their expertise and flexibility, ensured adherence to AASHTO standards while addressing site-specific challenges. Their rationalized suggestions accelerated high-quality project execution, earning widespread acclaim.
